I studied piano and Performing Arts with Gavin Bryars and John White and went on to further study with Sophia Rosoff, founder of the Abby Whiteside Foundation in New York.  Sophia Rosoff greatly influenced my teaching style, developing a keenness to listen and strive for the overarching musical shape and rhythm and to always to “find the tune”.

I have taught piano at all levels for over twenty five years and like to think that my teaching style is intense but fun.  I am very happy to work with adults, perhaps those seeking to resume their piano studies or who are looking for a new challenge.  Although classically trained I am happy to teach all musical styles placing emphasis on enjoyment and building confidence.  For younger pupils I am keen to follow the ABRSM curriculum (see Exams) and am happy to work with students who are seeking to widen their repertoire outside this format.

I am also a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique (ruthdavis.com) and while this technique is not employed directly, Alexander’s underlying key ideas are observed throughout a lesson.

Reaching the goal by giving up the intention of reaching it!
