F.M. Alexander (1869-1955) was poorly throughout his childhood and as a young man, when training to become an actor, found that he was beginning to lose his voice.  Despite taking medical advice the condition worsened and he realised that it was something that he was doing with himself that was causing the problem.

After a long period of close observation with the aid of mirrors he found that he was pulling his head back and down on his spine.  With further study he found that the relationship of his head, neck and back was responsible for the whole tone of his body.  However, his real discovery was finding a way to inhibit his habitual goal-oriented behaviour which fundamentally affected his posture and ultimately cured his throat complaint.  As he began to use these insights his health vastly improved and he experienced a heightened state of well being.  He started the first teacher training course in London in 1930.

“Every single thing we are doing in the work is exactly what is being done in Nature the difference being that we are learning to do it consciously”
